Moonlighting, a common term in the labor world, has gained renewed traction in recent years, following the increased adoption of remote work and other changes to the workplace. Stakeholders have put the term under the spotlight again from various angles, including the legal and economic implications, which traditionally made the practice a gray area for many employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rie Kobayashi is one of the few chosen ones who have found a perfect spot within that gray area. So far, she has successfully blended being an Odakyu Romance Car driver with a fledgling career as a picture book author. She has published one book and is already working on a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Moonlighting?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Moonlighting is the practice of working a second job outside business hours. Employees involved in this practice may work the 9-to-5 job as a primary source of income but work nights at a different job to earn extra money or to pursue a hobby. While many critics tend to paint the practice in a negative light, working two jobs is not expressly illegal. However, some employers institute work contracts that forbid their employers from taking a job or pursuing a business that conflicts with theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, Kobayashi doesn\u2019t have to worry about that. Her job at Odakyu Electric Railway, which allowed her to volunteer within the community, was the foundation for her foray into publishing. \u201cI became involved with picture books after joining Odakyu Electric Railway. At first, while working as a driver, I volunteered to read picture books,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volunteering, a Connection Track<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although Kobayashi loves reading picture books, her decision to volunteer as a reader stemmed from much more than love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She recalls, \u201cAt Odakyu Electric Railway, there are various projects that employees voluntarily carry out, such as railway safety classes for kindergartens and elementary schools, and English conversation classes for employees”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
